Should Muslims fast on the day of Ashura?


A section of Muslims, who take Yazid and the Umayyads as role models, have concocted stories to reduce the significance of Muharram as a period of mourning, making it appear that it was always a month of festivities regardless of Imam Husain’s (a.s.) martyrdom. Among the stories publicized by these Muslims is that the fast of Ashurah is highly recommended. Of all references, they point to the Jewish practice of fasting on Ashurah.
